BEIJING: Almost half a billion dollars worth of smuggled frozen meat — some of it rotting and more than 40 years old — has been seized in China, reports said on Wednesday.
More than 100,000 tonnes of chicken wings, beef and pork worth up to three billion yuan ($483 million) were seized in the nationwide crackdown, the state-run China Daily newspaper said.
“It was smelly, and I nearly threw up when I opened the door,” said an official from Hunan province, where 800 tonnes were seized.
A report on the official Hunan propaganda website said that the meat seized locally came from the “border area” with Vietnam, where it was “difficult to control the flow of meat”.

OMG, 40 year old meat!

Poor food safety is a major concern in China. Still 40 years old meat sounds tragic. It beats all modern inventory norms. Someone during these years must have seen it as dead (pun intended) inventory. Who paid all those inventory carrying charges? It seems electrical failures are not as frequent as they happen in Maharashtra. Otherwise the stores clerks there would be dead by the smell of the dead meat anyway.
great efforts by China…we also need to give full powers to food inspectors to check all the facilities

worst………. reading articles like this wanto stop eating non veg………..
It has to be thrown to the dogs now. Yang Xiaoli, who bought a hundred dogs from the dog festival at Yulin for $1000.00 (it works out to $10 per dog) can buy this meat for feeding her dogs. The only problem is it would spoil further even before they got to eat it fully, if that were possible

It doesn’t make any sense at all, how can anything be stored for 40years, I mean why would anyone waste so much of time, power, space to store meat. If you logically look at it 40 years back there surely would have been very few fridges/freezers, power may have been costly. Wouldn’t the people storing the meat want to sell and get rid of it as soon as possible. Also so many decades passed they would need at least two generations to look after it, wouldn’t some people die by that time of change careers etc. Simply does not work out for anyone.
Decades old and they call it food…ek!
4 Decades old meat still preserved, still these Chinese are consuming it..OMG.
Haha as if india is great in food safety stds… Lmao
