In an effort to mitigate the ridiculous amounts of smog that cloud China’s biggest cities, local scientists have teamed up to develop the world’s first hydrogen- fuelled tram.
Manufactured by the Sifang Company, which is a subsidiary of the China South Rail Corporation, in conjunction with several research institutions around the country, it gets enough power from one tank of hydrogen to travel 100 kilo metres at a top speed of 70 km/h, and can trans port at least 380 passengers at a time.
The vehicle, which has been in development for the past two years, has reportedly just rolled off the production line in coastal city of Qing dao last week, so it’s expected to be hitting the streets very soon.
What’s so awesome about it is its only emission is water - the temperature inside the fuel cell will be controlled to stop any nitrogen oxides from forming - so it’s doing zero damage to the environment, and at the same time, it doesn’t sacrifice any practicality. It only takes three minutes to refill, and due to the relatively quick routes taken by Chinese public transport users, drivers will only have to refuel a few times a day. It's also cheap to run, the researchers report.
"The average distance of tramcar lines in China is about 15 kilo metres, which means one refill for our tram is enough for three round trips," Liang Jian ying, chief engineer of the Si fang Company, told the Xin hua news agency.
四方公司的总工程师Liang Jian ying对新华社说道，“中国平均的电车线路长度是15公里，这意味着一次加氢足够电车往返三次”
The tram is a testament to the Chinese government’s commitment to do some thing to figure out it s smog problem. Just last year, the Chinese Environmental Protection Ministry reported that almost 90 per cent of its cities had fallen below the threshold for air safety standards. Now it's time for the rest of the world to follow suit and get some of these awesome trams on their streets.

About 80 years ago we had a tram in my hometown that emitted only water and fertilizer.

I am quite sure it emitted C O_2 as well.

You have to generate electricity to electrolyze water to make hydrogen. Why would any one argue that hydrogen is better than taking that electricity to power the car?
Phenomeno m nom
That's very cool, but the oil and auto industries decided for us, a long time ago, that the U S was not going to be needing a useful, practical rail system, like other 1s t world countries have, thanks very much but no thanks.
Waz zle doozle
Great. Now produce the hydrogen without fossil fuels and they will have accomplished some thing.

Chinese scientists have built the world’s first hydrogen-powered tram
Given how often Chinese- made products explode, and how dangerous their rail system has been over the years, I don't for see a good end for this.
S o...Where are they getting the hydro gen to power it? Sure, displacing the pollution away from city centers is a worth while thing, but the actual energy to get that hydrogen had to come from some where and it's probably not with out it s environmental impacts.
Turn about now
Great, how much energy are they using to obtain the hydrogen?

I T T: Experts on Energy usage. Thank god we're all here, now we can fix all the world's energy problems.

Sounds awe some, but aren't trams every where run with electricity? Which is more convenient and highly practical as well, since trams run on short, well defined routes.
Chinese scientists have built the world’s first hydrogen- powered tram
W o w! Chinese are masters of hydrogen powered tram technology! unbelievable. Now if only the rest of the world would follow suit!

Only 100k m range? That won't last more than a few hours in a city.

Well, it s not efficient and we don't know the real consequences.. at least not y e t.
At least it s a step forward.. Lessons will be learned and soon progress would be made. Good luck to them.
