Indian state bans beef, introduces jailtime for possession
India's western state of Maharashtra hasintroduced a ban on beef so strict that even possession could land you in jailfor five years, media reports and the chief minister said Tuesday.
The country's Hindu majority considers cowssacred, and several states already ban their slaughter.
But the latest measures in Maharashtra --home to India's commercial centre Mumbai -- go even further, making the sale orpossession of beef an offence punishable by a five-year jail term or a 10,000rupee ($160) fine.
The Indian Express newspaper said themeasures became law after President Pranab Mukherjee gave his assent to a legalamendment -- which was passed by the state parliament two decades ago, but wasnever sent to a president for approval.
The measures include a ban on the slaughterof bulls and bullocks, hitherto legal with a vet's certificate, although itwill still be legal to slaughter buffalo.
Whatever happened to India's seculardemocracy and strict separation of church & state?
This issues annoys me because it pretty much just ignores that...
Why are all the non-Indians getting riledup over a ban on Beef in India? How is it any of your business? It's not your country, not your culture, mostof you are not even Hindus. Nobody in India needs or cares about youropinion.
And btw, bending over in a downward dog position at a yoga class didn't makeyou Hindu. Mind your own business. But start using Turmeric - haldi in Hindi.Keeps the cancer from all the beef eating away.
India hasa deep rooted social issues. I was in India recently on an officialassignment and what I saw with my eyes were unbelievable. I have travel throughout my life and had so many experiences but my experience in India chewedthe biscuit.
I just feel pity and empathy for ladies over there. The system is so @$!#@ and
ladies in India are treated like trash YES I said trash, they've been sorelegated to the background to the extent that they're made to believe andaccept men as higher and superior being than them. Dating is a taboo in Indialittle wonder you hear of these social vices on a daily basis. Ladies are notallow to go out with a guy, any lady seen with a guy is treated with disdain, suffers humiliation and harassment. The married ladies are meant to treat theirhusband as gods, like they're always right.
The issue I have here is why making ordinary cows sacred and allow your ladiesto be humiliated?
