BEIJING (AP) — Chinese authorities vowed to severely punish Chinese travelers who threw hot water and noodles on a Thai flight attendant and threatened to bomb the plane after they became enraged over sitting arrangements.
China National Tourism Administration said Saturday the tourists disrupted the flight, hurt other passengers and "badly damaged the overall image of the Chinese people." It comes at a time when the Chinese are traveling more but also becoming notorious for rough behavior.
A Chinese passenger berated a crew member of the budget airline Thai AirAsia before pouring hot water and throwing noodles at her during a charter flight to Nanjing last Thursday. The flight returned to Bangkok and the pilot asked the passenger and her entourage of three others to disembark. They were reportedly upset after being told they couldn't sit together and even after a flight attendant helped them change the seats.
In footage aired by China's state television CCTV, a male passenger loudly threatened to bomb the plane. He later said the attendant was scalded by accident during a tussle over a receipt they had requested for the hot water.
After the plane turned back, the captain and the crew invited the passenger to discuss the situation and reached "an amicable conclusion," Thai AirAsia said.
The Chinese tourism administration did not say what punishment the tourists could face, but the statement suggested that the travel agency that organized the trip could be punished for failing to offer proper behavior guidance and that the tourists should be blacklisted for bad credit.
Many in China reacted saying they were embarrassed by such behavior. Even Chinese President Xi Jinping, during a recent visit to the Maldives, urged the Chinese tourists to be more civilized by not throwing away plastic bottles or destroying coral reefs.
More than 100 million Chinese have traveled overseas this year, more than any other country.
I travel a lot. It's no secret that the Chinese are the worst ever. They are loud, rude, they cut in line, they crowd others away from sales counters. They have no manners at all, unlike the Japanese, Koreans and Philippinos I run across. And now that they think they are top dogs they are even worse. I guess when a Chinese group leaves and they haven't carved their names in a monument or pooped in the alley next to your business you have come out pretty good. Money does not buy class, it just makes street rabble worse.
In August of 2014, I was visiting South Korea. The hotel I stayed in Daegu is fairly upscale. A couple of nights, a large group of Chinese tourists (from mainland China) stayed at the same hotel. They were dressed decently. But most of them behaved very, very badly, ill-mannered, and extremely boisterous. Before you are exiting the elevator, they will storm right into the elevator!!! Even after midnight, they were making so much noise in the hall and shutting the doors loud. I had to call the hotel security twice. Then, in Seoul, I ran into another group of Chines tourists at a hotel. They, too, behaved very badly in many aspects. I know China is rapidly growing to be a powerhouse. But, most of its citizens are still act and behave in a very uncivilized manner. Trust me, I am not making this up. Why would I? I personally observed it and experienced it just a few months ago......
While it is abhorring behavior, as a foreigner who been living and working in China for the last 10+ years, let me say that these "bad" Chinese are the more affluent less educated group. They embarrassed many mainland Chinese too. Even in China, when I encounter rude behavior, I .
normally tell them off nicely
It is most unfortunate that the Chinese government do not start promoting courteous behavior from within the government departments and SOEs first. This should be the 1st place to change attitudes & behavior.
If China government want to rebuild image, those tourists must be punished severely. It will give good lessons to others. In addition to the punishments, all future tourists must be well-trained before letting them go abroad. The way most of them act now is very shameful especially for a country that is considered as one of the super powers in the world. How can China leads the world if most of its people are so ignorant to foreign custom? Right now, everywhere I go, when I see group(s) of mainland Chinese together I know troubles right away ... I'm too tired to put up with them, and just try to stay away instead.
On a recent visit to a Zoo,a funny thing happened. People were watching Monkeys playing in an enclosure, all of sudden the monkeys stopped playing and started throwing Feces at a visitor who happened to be Chinese, shortly after that the Chinese visitor started throwing Feces back at the monkeys, this went on for 15 minutes and right after that the monkeys and the Chinese visitor started laughing at each other.it was almost like the monkeys were saying " Cousin where have you been?long time No see".
I was from mainland China. I hate to say that I am ashamed of the behavior of the mainland Chinese people. I went on a cruise from Hong Kong to Taiwan a few years back. There were a lot of mainland Chinese on board. They were rude, loud. They cut in front of the buffet line (or any line for that matter). I hope the China National Tourism Administration take this incident seriously and educate their people. It's the only way to improve their image.
