Coming back to Urumqi - Sunset, our last day was telling us a grand good bye after an excellent njiang trip and remembering Tib is waiting for us:

Tomorrow we will be heading to ning to start our Tib trip by Qinghai - Lhasa Railway.

Awesome. Awaiting tiban updates. I'm sure lhasa looks different from the fake posters we see put up in ladakh.
Om mani padme hum.

Yes next we will head to Tib, much more awaited and popular than njiang, that I can feel But before reaching Lhasa wait for another engineering marvel, Qinghai - Tib Railway, many record holders high altitude train and the scenery around, I think it would awe struck many of us, so get ready for a high over dose of 150 snaps atleast before we can reach Lhasa.

But it's coming soon

Om mani padme hum

I am curious to know:
1. if you tried to learn some basic Chinese phrases before you embarked on your journey (since you mentioned you planned it for around 2 years before the actual journey), 2. If you did, how much of a help it was dealing with the locals? (or do they loathe speaking Chinese and instead speak in their own tongue in the areas you visited)? I know for a fact that locals anywhere in the world appreciate if a foreigner so much as tries to communicate in the local language - what's your experience? 3. been to Beig once and the big problem I had was to find some food that I could eat to survive - being a vegetarian and with no Chinese language ability! On long trips like these especially in reme areas what options do vegetarians have and in general your experience regarding food. Appreciate your input and I apologize if you have answered these kind of queries already.
Thanks again for posting.
Cheers

To answer your questions:

No I didn't learn Chinese, had I been preparing for 20 years, still the languages like Chinese or Tamils are not my cup of tea, I am weak in learning language, so I didn't even give much try, rather tried to find translators, few handy words, few Chinese print outs like this.

Ofcourse you can get more form Locals if you know local language but if you have noticed I visited two places where Han Chinese are minorities, In njiang Us and in Tib Tiban is the main language. But still I could speak to few people who could communicate in English and got some zing revelation.

In Southern njiang we had Nan and Kababs and Pulao. It's a pain for Veg people but not an issue for us who were non veg. In Tib things are simpler you get both and Indian and Nepali style foods were available. In Northern njiang we had a taste of real Chinese food and regarding food, that's the part of the trip we would love to forget. It's quite tasteless and didn't find any salt and sugar in any restaurant.

Sorry to repeat. But this is so not "China".

kshil

It is China but again I am repetitive here, the part of China which Chinese don't want to show to outside world. Certainly you would see what you are thinking if you visit east coast cities of Beig, Shanghai, Guang etc.

Day 20

第20天

It's also advisable to get 4 copies of your Tib Permit as you have to give one copy to enter the station with a Lhasa bound train ticket and other copy is collected at the waiting room check in gate to platform and another copy is collected by ticket checker at platform before you board the train. You need one copy with you as that will be asked for when you get down from Train in Lhasa and will be required until you are handed over to your guide by police. Once you get into the train, your tickets are taken away by Ticket collector and instead you would be handed over by plastic cards which you would carry till the remaining journey. You would get your original tickets back just 10 mins before arrival to your final station. This is good as you would get a reminder (even if you sleep) that your destination is approaching but I think another reason is to mon or your movement, you simply can't get down in between any station you wish as you don't have your original ticket with you and you would be caught in platform itself.
